SDLP Leader Claire Hanna MP said Northern Ireland’s place in Europe must be considered as part of Ireland’s upcoming EU Council Presidency.

Ms Hanna was speaking as Ireland’s six-month term began on Wednesday.

She will attend an event at Dublin Castle to mark the occasion.

South Belfast and Mid Down MP Claire Hanna said:

“Ireland’s EU Council Presidency comes at a time of great uncertainty across Europe and around the world. Conflict rages in the Middle East, the genocide in Palestine continues and Ukraine continues to feel the might of Russia’s war machine. Many world leaders are bad faith actors who continue to put their own interests ahead of the people they’re supposed to represent.

“This is an important opportunity for Ireland to put forward our values, to show the kind of moral leadership and stability that continues to see this island punch above its weight on the world stage. It is also a time to call out injustice and speak truth to power. There cannot be a blind eye turned to the deteriorating security situation around the world.

“Northern Ireland’s relationship with the EU must also be acknowledged during the presidency. We believe there is a chance to address outstanding issues from Brexit, to secure continued European funding that has done so much good, while also seeking further cooperation between the UK and Irish Governments built on improved relations.

“As the North’s most pro-European party the SDLP will continue to advocate for our goal to build a New Ireland at the heart of Europe. This Presidency is an opportunity to demonstrate the value of European cooperation and why our future is strongest when we work together across these islands and across our continent.”
