SDLP Leader Claire Hanna MP has pushed Prime Minister Keir Starmer to clarify reports the UK Government would cut digital service tax in response to tariffs from the US.

She was speaking ahead of an announcement from Donald Trump on planned tariffs on Wednesday.

Ms Hanna said the government could not justify pandering to large tech companies.

South Belfast and Mid Down MP Claire Hanna said:

“As we wait with bated breath to learn exactly what economic harm President Trump is planning to inflict on the US and places around the world, reports that the UK Government is planning to cut digital service tax are deeply concerning. We cannot pander to Trump and his mates like Elon Musk by handing out tax breaks all while social media giants corrupt our politics and prey on our young people.

“Of course, we want to see the government taking steps to limit the impact of the economic harm caused by Trump, but big tech companies have been allowed to act with impunity for far too long with no regard for the harm they cause, all while raking in billions. You don’t respond to a bully by trying to placate them and Trump has repeatedly shown that he cannot be reasoned with.

“It speaks volumes that at a time when the government is cutting support for the most vulnerable they are considering further tax breaks for big corporations. I gave the Prime Minister a direct opportunity today to clarify these reports and he chose not to take it. I would encourage him to learn from the long list of people who’ve tried - and failed - to make nice with Trump, before sacrificing online safety and risking disastrous consequences for society here.”
