SDLP Leader Claire Hanna MP has urged the UK Government and Executive to stop public squabbling and work together to deliver much-needed energy support.

She was speaking following confusion around the funding and mechanism available to provide support from money allocated by the UK Government.

It has been reported that all households in Northern Ireland are set to receive £30 through this funding.

South Belfast and Mid Down MP Claire Hanna said:

“At a time when people are genuinely worried about how they will pay rising energy and household bills, the UK Government and Executive are failing to show leadership. Instead, we are seeing an unedifying public spectacle, with contradictions around how much money is available and how it can be used.

“Rather than passing the buck back and forth, the UK Government and Secretary of State should be working with the Finance and Economy Ministers to design and deliver a scheme that supports people at a difficult moment, with conflict escalating in the Middle East.

“It is obvious that £30 for every household will not provide the support needed for those who are really struggling. This risks a situation where many who do not need help receive it, while those who do are left with very little.

“The SDLP recognises the logistical challenges around means-tested support and the need to act quickly, but it is clear that the current proposal will do little to address this crisis. If this scheme is to have any real impact, it must be refocused on those most in need and delivered in a way that actually addresses the pressures facing households.”
