SDLP Opposition Education Spokesperson Cara Hunter has said there is a need for clarity from the Education Minister following today’s Supreme Court ruling on Religious Education.
East Derry MLA Cara Hunter said:
“There has been much commentary following this morning’s Supreme Court ruling and what it may mean for schools in Northern Ireland. To avoid undue worry or each school charting their own course, the department should provide legally sound guidance for schools, staff, pupils and their families about what this means and doesn’t mean.
“What is clear however is that while the way religion is approached in schools may change, there has been no suggestion that religion be removed entirely. It is unhelpful that some have leapt upon this judgement and seem intent on using it for political purposes. Schools don’t need another DUP culture war.
“Our education system must be able to cater for those who want their children educated in a religious or non-religious setting without any child being disadvantaged. It is right that schools are able to reflect the diversity of belief and non-belief in our society. The SDLP will be following the outcomes of this judgement closely and ensuring that the voice of schools and parents is key in determining the way forward.”
