SDLP Opposition Education Spokesperson Cara Hunter MLA has warned that the Education Minister’s plans to reform GCSE and A-Level qualifications risk disadvantaging young people.
The Minister announced this week that his department will be reviewing qualifications across schools.
East Derry MLA Cara Hunter said:
“The Minister’s proposed reforms have already raised serious concern among school leaders, parents and young people themselves. While I welcome any attempt to strengthen our education system, there is a very real risk that these changes could make things worse for students rather than better.
“I would challenge the logic of moving all A-Level exams to the end of the final school year. The current modular system tests young people throughout the two years, providing a more balanced and fair reflection of their performance. Replacing that with high-stakes exams would place huge pressure on pupils, raise questions around how re-sits would operate, and could lead to poorer outcomes for many.
“There are also concerns about students being forced to choose subjects at the start of their courses with no flexibility to change, and the uncertainty over how any new qualifications would be recognised by universities in the South. These are major issues that cannot be brushed aside.
“The Minister must explain clearly how these reforms would benefit schools and young people. The SDLP Opposition will continue engaging with teachers, students and parents to ensure any changes deliver fairness, opportunity and the skills our young people need for successful futures.”
