SDLP West Tyrone MLA Daniel McCrossan has called for urgent action from the Department for Infrastructure to address the worsening and dangerous condition of the A5.
Mr McCrossan said the road surface has deteriorated to an unacceptable level, with large potholes, blocked gullies and dangerous stretches of standing water creating serious risks for motorists.
He said his office has received numerous complaints from concerned road users, including reports of motorists losing control of their vehicles after striking potholes or hitting standing water.
West Tyrone MLA Daniel McCrossan said:
“The A5 is already recognised as one of the most dangerous roads on these islands, yet drivers are now being forced to navigate crater sized potholes and water laying across the road. This is completely unacceptable.
“I have repeatedly contacted the Department about these issues, but I am sick of reporting the same defects while little is actually done.
“If the Sinn Féin Infrastructure Minister cannot progress the A5 project, then the bare minimum we should expect is that the road is maintained properly.
“This is a major arterial route and the current condition is simply not acceptable. The Minister and her department must act now before someone is seriously injured or worse.”
