SDLP Mid Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone has requested an urgent meeting with the leadership of BBC Northern Ireland following reports of proposed job losses and restructuring within the organisation.

Mr. McGlone is seeking clarity on the impact these changes will have on staff, local broadcasting and Irish language services, and has called for meaningful engagement with those affected before any decisions are finalised.  He will also meet with Foras na Gaeilge on Monday to discuss the implications for Irish language broadcasting.

Patsy McGlone MLA said:

“News of proposed budget cuts and job losses at BBC Northern Ireland, including roles connected to Irish language production, will be deeply concerning for staff and communities across the North.

“These proposals raise important questions about the future of public service broadcasting and local programming, as well as the BBC’s ability to reflect the diverse voices and experiences of the people it serves. At a time when trusted local journalism and quality local content are more important than ever, any reduction in broadcasting capacity deserves close scrutiny.

“I have particular concerns in relation to the potential impact on Irish language broadcasting. The Irish language cannot be regarded as an optional extra - it is a vital part of our shared identity, and BBC services have played an important role in promoting and developing the language for current and future generations.

“Any reduction in dedicated in-house expertise for Irish language programming will understandably cause anxiety among the Irish language community. While the BBC has indicated that spending and output levels will be maintained, people will want assurances that this does not lead to a dilution of quality, consistency or long-term ambition for Irish language content.

“I have requested an urgent meeting with the leadership of BBC Northern Ireland to seek clarity on these proposals, their impact on staff and audiences, and the steps being taken to protect both local broadcasting and Irish language services. Those affected deserve clear answers.

“I will also be meeting with Foras na Gaeilge on Monday to discuss the implications of these proposals and to ensure the concerns of the Irish language community are fully represented.

“The BBC must now pursue genuine and meaningful engagement with staff, audiences, and wider stakeholders before any final decisions are taken. Irish speakers deserve confidence that this is not the beginning of a gradual erosion of provision. We should be strengthening and expanding Irish language broadcasting, not creating uncertainty about its future.

“Protecting and promoting the Irish language requires ambition, investment and a clear commitment to growth. The BBC must demonstrate that these proposals will strengthen, rather than diminish, public service broadcasting in the North.”
