SDLP Mid Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone has welcomed a Court of Appeal decision to affirm a High Court ruling that the UK Government must hold a public inquiry into the murder of Sean Brown.
Mr McGlone and SDLP Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty attended court with the Brown family on Friday.
Secretary of State Hilary Benn has already confirmed the government’s intention to appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court.
Mid Ulster MLA Mr McGlone said:
“I have stood with the Brown family at court on many occasions over the years and today was particularly moving as the family were given a rapturous applause upon arrival. This stands in stark contrast to the way they have been treated by the UK Government who are using every dirty trick in the book to stop them uncovering the truth of what happened to their husband and father.
“To try to drag Bridie Brown to London for a Supreme Court hearing all so they can protect the dark forces in state agencies who helped carry out this murder should shame this government. It flies totally in the face of their obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights.
“The court today affirmed what we already know – there must be a public inquiry into the murder of Sean Brown and truth for the Brown family. The courage and determination of the Brown family should serve as a reminder to all parties that no state or non-state actor has a right to determine a victim's pathway to truth and justice.”
