SDLP Opposition Health Spokesperson Colin McGrath MLA has challenged Minister Mike Nesbitt on security for health workers.

He asked an urgent oral question in the Assembly on Monday following racially motivated disorder last week.

South Down MLA Colin McGrath said:

“During the disgraceful scenes of racist disorder across the North last week, we saw healthcare workers specifically targeted. Many of those affected have travelled here to play an invaluable role within our health service and wider society.

“Reports of healthcare workers being stopped and asked for identification, and in one case being chased into a hospital, should concern every one of us. There were staff who felt unable to travel to work because they feared encountering the mobs that took to our streets. The reality is that our health service depends on these workers. They dedicate their lives to caring for patients, often in challenging circumstances, and we owe them our gratitude.

“While I welcome the reassurance provided by the Health Minister today, healthcare workers and our migrant communities need to see more than words. We need robust security measures, clear support for affected staff and a commitment that anyone targeted will be protected and supported. We must ensure they can carry out their vital work free from fear and intimidation.”
