SDLP South Down MLA Colin McGrath has said that the new Narrow Water Bridge will transform communities on both sides of the border.
He was speaking after it was reported work was to begin within weeks after a contract was awarded for the project.
South Down MLA Mr McGrath said:
“This project has been in the works for decades and the awarding of the contract to build the Narrow Water Bridge is a watershed moment in seeing this vital infrastructure project delivered. There will be great excitement right across Co Down and Co Louth with work set to begin imminently with hopes of seeing it completed by 2027.
“The Narrow Water Bridge has the potential to transform communities on both sides of the border, bringing them closer together and making it easier for people to travel between them for work and social activities. It will also create a number of tourism opportunities in what is a stunning part of our island, bringing new jobs and attracting investment.
“Seeing this project realised has been a key priority for the SDLP over many, many years. It was driven forward by the late PJ Bradley and that good work was carried on by his daughter Sinead. In government, the SDLP did everything possible to get this across the line and I’m delighted to see that hard work has paid off. I’d also like to thank local campaigners who have worked tirelessly on highlighting the potential of the Narrow Water Bridge and we now need to get on and see it built to benefit everyone right across the border area.”
