SDLP Policing Board member Colin McGrath MLA has said the Police Ombudsman must be properly resourced to ensure effective scrutiny of the PSNI.
He was speaking after the Ombudsman warned that resources would have to be diverted to investigate a former police officer accused of offences including rape and misconduct in public office.
The Ombudsman’s office said the investigation would require resources to be diverted from other cases.
South Down MLA Colin McGrath said:
“These revelations that the Police Ombudsman is investigating a former officer for more than ten serious offences with multiple victims are deeply disturbing. Reports that this may only be the tip of the iceberg, coming after allegations last week that a number of officers are being investigated for abusing their position for sexual purposes, will cause serious concern among the public.
“There is no doubt this case must command the Ombudsman’s full attention. The circumstances surrounding these accusations, what steps were taken by the PSNI at the time and how the accused officer left the police service must all be brought to light.
“However, it is clear – and has been for some time – that the Police Ombudsman’s office must be properly resourced to carry out its work. If the office is warning that resources must be diverted from other investigations, it underlines the need for additional funding. The Justice Minister must ensure the Ombudsman has the resources needed to investigate these allegations fully.
“A robust and well-resourced Police Ombudsman is essential to maintaining confidence in policing, particularly in light of the allegations that have emerged in recent weeks.”
