SDLP Opposition Economy Spokesperson Sinéad McLaughlin MLA has said Invest NI's latest annual performance figures demonstrate that Northern Ireland's economic success continues to be concentrated in the East of the region, leaving the North West behind.
The latest figures show that 4,134 jobs were promoted by Invest NI during 2025-26. Of those, 2,393 jobs – almost 58% – were located in Belfast, while Derry City and Strabane accounted for just 6.5% of jobs promoted.
The figures also show that Invest NI secured 20 new inward investors, creating 740 new jobs. Ms McLaughlin said there was no evidence that any of those new investors chose to locate in the North West.
Foyle MLA Sinéad McLaughlin said:
"I welcome every job and every investment secured for Northern Ireland. We all benefit from having a stronger economy. But these figures once again expose the stark imbalance in where wealth and opportunity are being created.
"Almost six out of every ten jobs promoted by Invest NI last year were in Belfast, while Derry City and Strabane accounted for just 6.5%. That cannot be described as balanced regional growth.
"The figures also show that 20 new inward investors created 740 jobs across Northern Ireland. Yet there is no indication that a single one of those new investors chose to locate in the North West. That should concern everyone who wants to see every part of Northern Ireland fulfil its economic potential.
"Regional balance cannot simply be an aspiration. It must shape how investment decisions are made and how success is measured. That is why I have introduced my Regional Balance Bill. If we are serious about growing our economy, then every region must have a fair opportunity to attract investment, create jobs and share in prosperity.
"The North West has the skills, the talent and the ambition. It now needs the same level of opportunity."
