SDLP Opposition Economy Spokesperson Sinéad McLaughlin has called on the Minister for the Economy to urgently publish an assessment on the progress of the Sub-Regional Economic Plan.
It follows the Assembly’s support for an SDLP motion on regional balance on Monday.
The Foyle MLA said:
“The Assembly has sent a clear message, regional balance must be a priority for this Executive. People across our region are struggling. Their pockets are emptier while their bills continue to rise. A year ago, they were promised a better future through the Sub-Regional Economic Plan, yet not a single penny of the £45 million allocated to it has been spent. That is simply not good enough.
“We need urgent action and transparency from the Minister for the Economy. The Sub-Regional Economic Plan was designed to tackle long-standing inequalities and unlock opportunities for people and places that have been left behind. The Minister must now publish a clear assessment of progress, outline next steps, and ensure every Executive department plays its part in delivering regional balance.
“Regional balance is not a slogan, it is a promise of fairness. It’s about equality of opportunity, regardless of postcode or background. No one should have to worry about how they will pay their bills, no child should be denied the chance of a better education, and no one should die earlier because of where they live. Delivering that vision must now be a shared mission across government.
“That is why I have submitted my Regional Balance Bill proposal to the Speaker for decision. This Bill is about putting regional fairness at the heart of government - setting clear targets, improving transparency, and ensuring that every department plays its part in creating a fairer, more balanced Northern Ireland.”
