SDLP Opposition Economy Spokesperson Sinéad McLaughlin has said that job losses across Ulster University (UU) are devastating for the staff involved.

She was speaking after UU confirmed the loss of up to 450 jobs.

Ms McLaughlin said it underlined the funding pressures facing the higher education sector.

Foyle MLA Sinéad McLaughlin said:

“The loss of so many jobs at Ulster University is devastating news and our thoughts are with all of the staff affected. This will come as a real shock to staff, students and the wider public.

“These losses will have a significant impact, particularly at a time when many people are already under financial pressure. They will also be felt across the wider economy, with the loss of well-paid jobs that support families and local communities.

“What we are seeing is the direct impact of sustained funding pressures across our universities. It is clear that UU feels the Economy Minster has been unable to address their concerns.

“For years, there has been a clear ambition to expand Magee and increase student numbers in the North West and that must not be undermined. At a time when we should be investing in skills, growing our economy and retaining young people in our region, this is deeply worrying.

“The SDLP will be urgently seeking a meeting with UU and the Economy Minister to advocate on behalf of staff, and to fully understand the reasons behind these decisions.”
