Social Democratic and Labour Party Spokesperson on Sport Justin McNulty MLA has asked the Justice Minister to consider the introduction of legislation that would prevent those involved in criminality from operating in organised sport.
The Newry and Armagh MLA said that the Executive and the British Government have a duty to disrupt and dismantle the operation of crime gangs following a Panorama report on the involvement of Daniel Kinahan in boxing.
Justin McNulty MLA said:
“The Executive and the British Government needs to get much tougher on those involved in criminality hiding behind the veneer of professional sports.
“I was disappointed by Justice Minister Naomi Long’s passive response to my request for an assessment of the alleged impact of the Kinahan organisation on boxing, illegal drugs and organised crime in Northern Ireland. We need to get much tougher if we’re to address the impact that criminal gangs have in our communities.
“I have asked further questions of the Minister, including if she has any plans to bring forward legislation that would prevent those involved in criminality from operating in organised sport. I note that her party’s Deputy Leader Stephen Farry MP has also supported such a move.
“Our Minister and the British Government needs to get serious about disrupting and dismantling crime gangs operating across the border.”
