SDLP Leader of the Opposition Matthew O’Toole MLA has said deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly must provide urgent clarity about what she knew of Jeffrey Donaldson’s conduct.
He has written to the First Minister and deputy First Minister requesting that the deputy First Minister issue a statement to the Assembly, followed by an opportunity for MLAs to question her – and asking that the First Minister agree to allow this ministerial statement under the auspices of their joint office in order to maximise transparency.
South Belfast MLA Matthew O’Toole said:
“Following further allegations, it is clear there are serious questions the deputy First Minister must provide clarity on what she knew about Jeffrey Donaldson’s conduct.
“The Assembly cannot simply wait for the outcome of an internal DUP inquiry. Given the Executive Office’s responsibility for leading the Ending Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy, there is a clear public interest in ensuring these matters are addressed openly and transparently.
“I am calling on the deputy First Minister to make a statement to the Assembly and I would ask the First Minister to facilitate that. MLAs must then be given the opportunity to ask follow-up questions and properly scrutinise the issues that have been raised.
“Saying nothing in the hope that this issue will pass is not an option. Confidence in public life, in the Executive and among victims of violence and abuse depends on these serious allegations being addressed in a full and transparent way.”
