O’Toole: Stormont Brake distraction from real issues

SDLP Leader of the Opposition Matthew O’Toole MLA has said continued debate around the Stormont Brake is a distraction from real issues.

He said parties’ focus should be on realising the benefits of dual market access and making the most of the opportunities presented by Northern Ireland’s unique relationship with Europe.

South Belfast MLA Mr O’Toole said:

“The SDLP has been clear that the Stormont brake is an ill-thought-out consequence of the clandestine negotiations between the DUP and the previous UK Government. Rather than allowing us to realise the opportunities of our unique position with dual market access, it furthers the notion that this place is inherently unstable and actively discourages businesses from investing here, depriving us of the chance to improve our economy and create jobs.

“Instead of continual debate around the Stormont brake, we need the Secretary of State and the UK Government to engage with the EU around a permanent solution that recognises Northern Ireland’s unique position and allows us to make the most of dual market access.

“There is huge potential for the North to benefit from our relationship with Europe in a variety of areas and the SDLP will continue to push for progress around the proposals contained within the party’s ‘Our European Future’ paper, including representation in Europe, freedom of movement and support for our community and voluntary groups. As the North’s most pro-European party we look forward to engaging with the upcoming independent review of the Windsor Framework to that end.”
