The SDLP has backed the PSNI’s new recruitment campaign launched on Wednesday.

The PSNI recruitment drive is for student officers and police staff.

SDLP Policing Board member Colin McGrath MLA said:

“With the PSNI’s new recruitment campaign launching today, I would encourage people across the North to consider a career in policing. It is a demanding role, but one rooted in public service and supporting people at their most vulnerable.

“I recognise there are significant barriers for those considering joining the PSNI. The data breach, chronic underfunding, unresolved legacy issues, the ongoing threat from dissidents and a number of high-profile missteps have all damaged confidence and made recruitment more difficult.

“The SDLP has consistently warned that the new beginning to policing is under pressure and has argued for decisive action to rebuild confidence and diversity within the service. Measures such as 50:50 recruitment should be revisited, alongside a renewed commitment to the rule of law and a legacy process that commands the confidence of victims and survivors.

“The Chief Constable has shown leadership on issues including legacy and funding, but this must now be backed by the Executive and by governments in Dublin and London. The SDLP will continue to push for the reforms and support needed to build a police service that is truly representative of the communities it serves.”
