Claire Hanna MP and Matthew O’Toole MLA have condemned last night’s attack on the Belfast Islamic Centre, after a viable device was thrown through a window while members of the Muslim community were gathered for prayers.
Speaking after the incident, Claire Hanna MP said:
“I am appalled by this attack on the Belfast Islamic Centre. I am hugely relieved that no one was seriously injured, but this was a frightening and disturbing experience for the centre’s users and for all of us who value a peaceful and shared society.
“It is welcome news that someone has now been charged in connection with this incident but we must be clear that this did not happen in a vacuum. There is an urgent need for consistent political leadership to challenge hate, intolerance and division wherever it arises.
“Belfast is an open and welcoming city. No one should ever feel unsafe in their place of worship. The SDLP will continue to stand in solidarity with the Muslim community and with all those working to build a more inclusive society.
“I also want to thank the police and first responders for their swift actions in response to this appalling attack.”
Leader of the Opposition Matthew O’Toole MLA said:
“Coming just a week after the appalling riots across the North, this cowardly attack is yet another stark reminder of the very real and growing threat of race hate in our society.
“Words alone are not enough. We need a clear plan for integration and support, and crucially, we need to see that plan delivered in action.
“I will again be pressing the Executive to honour its commitments on anti-racism and integration strategies, so that we can tackle these disgraceful acts of violence at their root.”
