The SDLP has pressed DAERA Minister Andrew Muir on funding for the clean-up of Mobuoy Dump.

Foyle MLAs Mark H Durkan and Sinéad McLaughlin met the Minister for an update on remediation of the polluted site alongside other political representatives.

Mark H Durkan said:

“It’s clear that the cost of cleaning up the environmental disaster at Mobuoy Dump will require significant funding, but the longer this situation is allowed to drift the longer remediation works will take and the greater the eventual cost will become.

“At the meeting we pressed the Minister for a clear timeline on remediation works and when funding will finally be put in place. While we acknowledge this is not a burden the Executive can shoulder alone, we have repeatedly urged them to engage with the UK Government to secure additional support alongside their own financial commitment.

“While I commend the work of the DAERA team in engaging with the local community and producing a remediation strategy, it was disappointing to hear that there is currently not one penny in place for Mobuoy Dump and it appears that it is not a priority for the Minister or the Executive.

“This environmental disaster has hung over the North West for years, delayed the vital A6 project and hurt the local economy. The Executive cannot continue to kick this issue further down the road while the environmental risks and financial costs continue to grow.”
