The SDLP has selected Déirdre Vaughan as its local government election candidate for Holywood and Clandeboye.
SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood said he was delighted to have a candidate steeped in her community and determined to improve the lives of people in the area.
Foyle MP Mr Eastwood said:
“Déidre Vaughan has been an outstanding community activist in the Holywood and wider North Down area for a number of years and I’m delighted she will be running to represent our party in the forthcoming election.
“Local government provides an opportunity to be a voice for change in the area you live and work, to address the issues that really matter to local people and to build a platform to improve the lives of everyone in your community. Déirdre has everything it takes to be a first-class representative and I know that she’s determined to be a force for positive change."
Ms Vaughan said:
“I’ve lived in this area for a number of years, it’s where I started my family, have watched my children grow and I’ve always been struck by the strong sense of community that exists here. I’m proud of and passionate about this area and its people, I believe it’s one of the best places to live in Northern Ireland and I’m determined to tackle the issues that exist and help this place reach its full potential.
“While we’re lucky to live in one of the most beautiful places anywhere on these islands, I’m aware of a number issues that exist. I will do my utmost to address issues around anti-social behaviour, road safety and to help mitigate the difficult situation faced by many families due to the cost of living emergency and other pressures.
“I want to be a representative that everyone in our community can be proud of and will do my utmost to work with everyone to make this area a happier, safer and more peaceful place to live.”
