Whyte welcomes expanded EV charging plans for North & West Belfast

25 January 2026

North Belfast SDLP councillor Carl Whyte has welcomed Belfast City Council's new plans to expand the EV charging network in North and West Belfast.

This followed initial proposals which would have seen the majority of new sites located in East Belfast.

Councillor Carl Whyte said:

“Electric vehicles are cheaper to fuel and better for the environment than diesel and petrol cars. It’s important that those who want to avail of these benefits are able to do so and that we have the infrastructure to meet that demand.

“While funding is available from the UK government to support the installation of EV charging networks, sadly the Department for Infrastructure has failed to install anywhere near the required level of public charging infrastructure.

“This means people who own or hire EVs rely on private chargers making long distance travel more difficult and causing major headache if home or work EV chargers are broken.

“I welcome that this new process has identified 29 potential sites in North Belfast, 28 in West Belfast, 27 in East Belfast and 24 in South Belfast. Previous proposals in October would have seen just 5 sites in North Belfast and 8 in West Belfast which I made clear was not acceptable. Equal access to public EV infrastructure is vital if we are to properly support a transition from petrol/diesel to electric cars.”
