SDLP West Tyrone MLA Daniel McCrossan has questioned Sinn Féin’s commitment to the A5 road project.

He was speaking after Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins said she would not start construction until 2027.

It followed a meeting with Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU).

West Tyrone MLA Daniel McCrossan said:

“People are rightly furious about this announcement from the Minister that work on the A5 will not proceed until next year – no matter the outcome of the ongoing court action. The latest delay is because of the incompetence of Sinn Féin Ministers and their handling of this project and this intervention from the Minister flies in the face of previous commitments to progress the A5 at the first opportunity.

“When it comes to the A5 there is not a single moment to waste. People have been waiting for this for nearly two decades and to agree to further delay raises serious questions about Sinn Féin’s commitment to this project. How can the Minister justify a self-imposed delay?

“We have lost far too many lives on the A5, families have been left without loved ones and communities have been torn apart. Every delay puts people travelling along this road at risk. The SDLP want to see work begin on the A5 the first day, hour and minute possible and we would challenge Sinn Féin to do the same and deliver this long-promised project.”
